Abstract

The data were collected as part of a project conducted by university students during an advanced studies course in political science. The survey charted the values and social attitudes of students in the University of Tampere.

The respondents' political interest, participation and awareness were surveyed as well as their views of citizens' ability to influence politics. Values and attitudes were investigated by presenting the respondents several statements relating to, for example, same-sex marriage, nuclear power, income disparity, the European Union, sentences for violent crime, NATO membership, refugees and immigration, privatisation of public services, cuts to public spending, taxation, abortion, and use of fossil fuels.

Background variables included the respondent's gender, year of birth, marital status, field of study, school (faculty), membership in a student association, satisfaction with own financial circumstances as well as type of accommodation, type of municipality of residence, parents' political party choice in R's childhood, and type of degree R was doing during the survey (e.g. Bachelor's, Master's, PhD).
