Abstract

The study charted adults' proficiency in basic information-processing skills; literacy, numeracy and problem solving in technology-rich environments. Background information on the respondents included, among others, their educational and occupational backgrounds and their need for cognitive, physical, social, learning and computer skills.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The actual tasks and questions completed by the respondents are not available, but sample questions can be found on the PIAAC website. Users of the data should acquaint themselves with the further material provided on the website.

It is recommended that the PVs (plausible values) and variables derived from them are analysed by using a specific programme and that all PVs of the same component are included in the analysis. SAS and STATA macros suitable for analysing the PVs are available on the PIAAC website. Instructions on using the macros can also be found on the site. The website also contains a link to the website of the IEA cooperative, where the IDB Analyzer can be downloaded. The analyzer creates SPSS code that can be used with SPSS to conduct statistical analyses. In addition, the OECD provides its own tool, the Data Explorer, to enable descriptive analyses of Public Use Files (PUF).

The original ID variable was removed from the data during archiving.

Weighting

There are several weight variables in the data. The weight variables must be used in all statistical analyses to ensure that the results will be representative of the population.

Approximation based on the Taylor series linearization method is used by default in most statistical software, including SAS survey procedures, SPSS Complex Samples procedures, svy procedures in STATA, and Taylor approximations created for R. Generally, only one weight variable is used when using the Taylor series linearization method - in this case the actual sample weight SPTWT0.

The replication approach is used for PIAAC because approximations based on it are, in accordance with the item response theory, fully compatible with the derived PVs (plausible values). To ensure proper variance estimation, users seeking to conduct analyses should use the tools available on the OECD's PIAAC website. Jackknife 2 approximation was used for the Finnish data. Both the full sample weight SPTWT0 and the replicate weights SPFWT1-SPFWT80 are needed to use this approximation.
