Abstract

The survey charted the employment situation and job placement of persons who had graduated from the University of Tampere in 2010.

Current employment situation, employment history before and after graduation, and experiences of unemployment after graduation were investigated. The respondents were asked about the nature of their current job and whether the job was commensurate with their qualifications. One topic covered job searching methods used. The respondents were also asked which factors had been the most important in obtaining their current job and which factors may have hindered or prevented them from finding a job. Views were probed on whether they had gained useful skills and abilities (e.g. information seeking skills, social skills, language skills, problem solving skills) from their studies. Plans for further study were also surveyed.

Background variables included the respondent's gender, region, and information on the degree (degree programme, faculty, field of study and time of starting studies).

Data Sources

The background variables have been taken from the University of Tampere student register.

Sampling Procedure

Total universe/Complete enumeration

Questionnaires were mailed to all persons who had completed their M.A. or Licenciate of Medicine degree at the University of Tampere in 2010. The persons who graduated with a lower (Bachelor's) degree, for instance Bachelors of Education (nursery school teachers), were not included in the survey. The respondents received the questionnaire roughly one year after their graduation.

Of the 933 persons who had completed their degree in 2010, 575 persons responded to the survey.

It was also possible to respond to the survey on the Internet and 150 persons did so.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

Open-ended variables were removed from the data, with the exception of variables Q3D_1 and Q3D_2 regarding satisfaction with the university's educational provision. These responses were anonymised and the anonymised parts marked with [square brackets]. Background variables obtained from the student register were re-categorised when necessary to minimise the risk of identification. Because only a few males graduated in health sciences, two female respondents were coded as male to prevent identification.

Weighting

There are no weight variables in the data.
