Abstract

The interview study charted male experiences of myocardial infarction (commonly known as 'heart attack' or 'heart failure') from the viewpoints of coping with a sudden, life-threatening illness and of being a patient. Main themes were treatment, emotions, changes in world view, other people's reactions, health, ways of living, sex, eating habits, smoking, rehabilitation, and time spent in hospital. The data include 17 interview transcripts in Finnish.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

Non-probability: Purposive

Research participants were recruited from three hospitals in the capital area where patients who had had myocardial infarction were treated. Staff of the hospitals delivered the patients written invitations to participate in the study. Participants were also recruited in meetings of people who had expercienced myocardial infarction. The interviewees were purposively selected out of the people willing to participate. Before the actual interviews, one preliminary interview, which is not part of the data, was conducted. The interviews were conducted in the homes of the participants or at the researcher's workplace during the participants' sick leaves.

The researcher has transcribed and anoymised the data. Additionally, some identifying information has been deleted or changed during archiving.

The researcher transcribed the recorded interviews. During archiving, the data were anonymised and identifiers were replaved by pseudonyms whenever possible.
