Candidates in the 1996 municipal elections, members of the Social Democratic Party, the Centre Party, the National Coalition Party, Left Alliance, Swedish People's Party, the Green League and the Christian League in 1996 and population of Finland aged 18 years or more at the time of the interview. (excluding the Åland Islands)

Sampling Procedure

Probability: Stratified

Stratified sampling from the election candidate register. The sample includes candidates from 123 municipalities. The intended number of responses was 4,000, the received number 2,116. Systematic sampling from the member register of each party. For the Centre Party of Finland, a systematic sampling from member registers of 21 districts. Normal Omnibus procedure and agreement to a mail survey; variables 1-18 obtained through an Omnibus survey, variables 19-50 through a mail survey.

Weighting

The data collected from the population sample were weighted to the 1995 population distribution in Finland by age group (q19). The data collected from the sample of political party members were weighted to be representative of the official membership lists of the parties.
